Physico-chemical Studies on Bioluminescence Ii. the Production of Light by Cypridina Hilgendorfii Is Not an Oxidations

چکیده
T,hat the production of light and oxidation are intimately related to each other is a very general phenomenon judged from co,mmon sense and considered from the viewpoints of physics and chemistry. It is, therefore, no wonder that we find in the literature on the subject of the relation of oxygen to light production in living organisms, the statement that the production of light by bacteria, Noctiluca, Pholus, fire-flies and others, is an oxidation (4, p. 353-358). Harvey (2, p. 321) who has studied the action of oxygen on the production of light by Cypridina hilgendorfii, concludes:

Stereoselective incorporation of isoleucine into Cypridina luciferin in Cypridina hilgendorfii (Vargula hilgendorfii).
The emission of light in the marine ostracod Cypridina hilgendorfii (presently Vargula hilgendorfii) is produced by the Cypridina luciferin-luciferase reaction in the presence of molecular oxygen. Cypridina luciferin has an asymmetric carbon derived from isoleucine, and the absolute configuration is identical to the C-3 position in L-isoleucine or D-alloisoleucine. To determine the stereoselect...
متن کاملStudies on the Oxidation of Luciferin without Luciferase and the Mechanism of Bioluminescence
In five groups of luminous animals it can be shown that luminescence is connected with the oxidation of a substance, luciferin, in aqueous solution, in presence of an enzyme, luciferase, and dissolved oxygen. In the mollusc, Pholas dactylus, Dubois (1) has been able to oxidize Pholas luciferin with luminescence by KMn04, HzO, BaOz, PbOa, and hypochlorites. I have been unable to oxidize with lum...

We discovered aequorin and green fluorescent protein (GFP) in 1961 from the same species of jellyfish (Shimomura et al ., 1962). Our target was a luminescent substance, aequorin, and GFP was isolated as a by-product of aequorin owing to its bright conspicuous fluorescence. Both are unusual proteins but they had no particular importance when we first reported them. Their importance became appare...
متن کاملStudies on Bioluminescence
Some solubility, oxidation, reduction, and compound-forming characteristics of extracts of Cypridina luciferin have been presented. A method of purification has been described which increased the amount of luciferin per unit of dry weight, as measured by the total light emitted, to about two thousand times that in the dry starting material. The best yields were from 50 to 65 per cent.

Luciferase enzymes are involved in the bioluminescence reaction (light emission by living organisms). The bioluminescence process is a widespread phenomenon in the Nature. These enzymes are identified in some domains of life, but the luciferases from lampyrid genus are considered of for biological applications. The molecular cloning of a new type of firefly luciferase from Luciola lateralis was...
